Privacy Policy

This policy explains what abcbim.com collects, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. We collect as little as we can: the site has no advertising and no analytics trackers.

Who we are

abcbim.com is a career, community and learning platform for BIM and digital construction professionals, run by Femi Osewa in the United Kingdom. You can reach us through the contact page.

Your account

You need a free account to apply for roles and to comment. We keep your name, email address and password (stored only in scrambled form). If you sign in with Google or LinkedIn, we receive your name and email address from them and keep the account ID they give us, so you can sign in that way again; we never see your password there.

When you open a role’s original advert from the jobs board, we note which role and when, so you can find it again under “My applications”. You apply on the employer’s or recruiter’s own site, under their privacy policy; we never see what you send them.

To protect accounts, failed sign-ins are counted for a short time (against a scrambled form of your IP address), and a browser you have signed in from is remembered with a cookie, so a lock caused by someone else’s failed attempts does not shut you out.

Comments

Comments are open to members and every comment waits for a moderator. We keep the comment, your name and account, the date, and the IP address and browser details WordPress records with comments to fight spam. Your name and comment are shown publicly once approved; your email address never is.

Contact, Career Training and Post a job forms

When you send a message with the contact form, your name, email address, chosen topic, message and the page you sent it from are emailed to us so we can reply. They are not stored on this website.

When you send a Career Training enquiry, the same applies to what you add there: your name, email address, current role, the training areas you tick and what you would like to achieve are emailed to us so we can arrange an introductory call. They are not stored on this website.

When you submit a role with the Post a job form, the job details are emailed to us and saved on this website as a listing that waits for an editor’s review; it is only shown on the site once an editor publishes it. Your name, email address and company are kept with the listing so we can contact you about it and tell you when it is live; they are never shown on the site. We email you to confirm we received the role and again when it is published.

To protect the form from automated abuse, your IP address is checked against short-lived limits (it is stored only as a salted hash, for up to 24 hours), the domain of your email address is looked up in the public DNS to check that it can receive email, and messages may be checked by Akismet or Cloudflare Turnstile when those services are enabled. Rejected submissions are logged for up to 30 days without names, full email addresses, message text or IP addresses (only a shortened, salted hash of the IP address is kept), and the site keeps daily counts of stopped submissions, sign-ups, sign-ins and comments with no personal data at all.

Job alerts

If you sign up for job alerts, we store your email address, the discipline you chose and when you signed up, confirmed and were last emailed. We use them only to send you one email a week with new roles, and only when there are some. We don’t share your address.

You confirm your address by email first; sign-ups that are not confirmed within 7 days are deleted. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing deletes your details. No IP addresses are stored with your sign-up (the form only checks short-lived limits against a salted hash of it), and the domain of your address is looked up in the public DNS to check that it can receive email.

Discord conversations

Lessons, episodes and articles can show the latest messages from their thread on our Discord server, with the display name of the member who wrote them. Every such thread says so when it starts. We keep a copy of only the display name, message and time; a message edited or deleted on Discord changes or disappears here too. If you would rather a message of yours was not shown, ask a moderator or use the contact page. Visiting our pages sends nothing to Discord.

Other services

Our fonts come from Google Fonts and video thumbnails from YouTube, so your browser contacts Google to load them (Google sees your IP address). Videos play from youtube-nocookie.com and only load when you press play. Links to Discord, YouTube, LinkedIn and job adverts take you to sites with their own privacy policies.

Cookies

We only use cookies the site needs: to keep you signed in, to remember a browser you have signed in from (for 180 days), and a test cookie on the sign-in page. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.

How long we keep it

Your account, application list and comments stay until you ask us to delete them. Job alert sign-ups are deleted when you unsubscribe, or after 7 days if never confirmed. Anti-spam records are kept for at most 30 days and hold no personal details.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, through the contact page. We reply within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
